In 1571, the Turks conquered Cyprus for good. The spoils were many. Apart from
other cruelties, they took many girls as hostages, and they put them on boats to
keep them for the slave trade. One of those girls was Maria of the Senate, whose
origins were aristocratical, and whose beauty stood out. She wanted to avoid
the humiliation of slave trade for herself and for the other girls so bad, that she
managed to set the boat’s silicon storage on fire. The explosion that followed was
enormous. All the girls and the crew were gone…
