Η Κύπρος είναι σπίτι για μερικά από τα πλουσιότερα αποθέματα μεταλλεύματος χαλκού στον κόσμο. Τουλάχιστον από τη δεύτερη χιλιετία π.Χ., αυτά τα μεταλλεύματα χρησιμοποιούνται συστηματικά. Η παραγωγή και το εμπόριο χαλκού, καθώς και ο πλούτος που παρήγαγε, ήταν από καιρό η ραχοκοκαλιά της οικονομίας του νησιού, όπως αποδεικνύεται από το γεγονός ότι τα ορυχεία χαλκού του Τροόδους άνοιξαν ξανά τον 20ο αιώνα μ.Χ., μετά από χίλια χρόνια παύσης. Είναι όμως ο χαλκός απλά μία χρονική σήμανση στην ιστορία του νησιού ή είναι ένα πολύ πιο σημαντικό στοιχείο που εδραιώνει την ταυτότητα της Κύπρου;

Cyprus is home to some of the world's richest copper ore reserves. Since at least the second millennium BC, they have been intensively used. Copper production and trade, as well as the wealth generated by it, have long been the backbone of the island's economy, as evidenced by the fact that the Troodos copper mines were reopened in the twentieth century AD, after a thousand-year hiatus. But is copper only a mere timestamp in the history of the island, or is it a much more important element that solidifies the identity of Cyprus?
